Nigeria News: Hardship Protests: ‘Tinubu Is Protected’ – Lawmaker Claims As Senators, Reps, Politicians Flee Abroad
Lawmakers Flee Nigeria Amid Fears of Violence During #EndBadGovernance Protests
As the nation prepares for the upcoming #EndBadGovernance protests on August 1, many senators, members of the House of Representatives, and some members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) are reportedly leaving the country, citing medical checkups and summer holidays as reasons.
Fears of Safety and Security
The decision comes amid growing concerns over safety and security during the protests. Lawmakers, speaking anonymously, expressed fears of becoming targets if the nationwide protests proceed as planned, citing violent incidents during the 2020 #EndSARS protests.
Vulnerability of Lawmakers
A senator highlighted the vulnerability of lawmakers compared to ministers, governors, and presidential aides, who often have security protection. Lawmakers are more accessible to the public, making them potential targets during major uprisings.
Mass Exodus
The National Assembly chambers were hurriedly shut down, allowing members to process their visas and travel before the anticipated protests. A travel agent confirmed the high demand for international flight tickets, with many lawmakers seeking tickets to Europe, the Middle East, and other African countries.
Fear and Uncertainty
The sudden demand for summer tickets has significantly increased the cost, almost double the original price. Lawmakers are seeking refuge in countries like the United States, South Africa, Turkey, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, with some even opting for Ghana. The fear of violence and uncertainty has led to a mass exodus of lawmakers from the country.
