Frsc Cracks Down On Road Safety Violations In Anambra State

In a decisive move to improve road safety, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State announced that it will begin strict enforcement of speed limit devices and passenger manifests for commercial transport operators starting March 1. This initiative, part of the 2024 Operation Zero program, comes amid growing concerns over non-compliance with essential road safety measures.

The New Enforcement Plan

During a recent briefing in Awka, State Sector Commander Joyce Alexander highlighted the urgent need to address persistent road safety violations. She noted that many fleet operators have failed to install the mandatory speed limit devices on their vehicles—or worse, have tampered with them to evade speed regulations. In addition, the passenger manifest, which is a legal requirement for inter-state commercial transport operators, is often neglected. The manifest is vital as it provides key details such as names, contact information, and even blood groups, all of which are critical in the event of an accident.

Alexander made it clear:

“From March 1, FRSC will commence total enforcement in Anambra. We will have special intervention patrols where we will stop and check vehicles. Any motorist, especially fleet operators found sabotaging the implementation of the Speed Limit Device and passengers’ manifest will be arrested.”

She stressed that this enforcement is necessary to curb reckless driving, reduce road traffic crashes, and ultimately save lives and property.

Why This Matters

The increased scrutiny comes at a time when road safety in Anambra State has become a major public concern. Excessive speeding, poor vehicle maintenance, and inadequate record-keeping of passengers have all been identified as leading contributors to fatal road accidents in the region. According to FRSC data, non-compliance with speed regulations is a significant factor in many of the state’s fatal crashes.

Commander Alexander warned fleet operators against prioritizing profit over the safety of lives. She added that road safety is a shared responsibility—not only for transport operators but also for drivers, government, and even the media. The media, she noted, plays a crucial role in promoting awareness and educating the public on safe driving practices.

A Collaborative Effort for Safer Roads

In addition to the enforcement measures, the FRSC has commended the Anambra State government for its ongoing road construction and rehabilitation projects. Improved infrastructure is expected to complement the strict enforcement of safety regulations, further reducing the incidence of road accidents.

With the enforcement deadline rapidly approaching, transport operators are urged to comply with the new safety standards. Failure to do so will result in immediate action, including potential arrests for those caught tampering with or neglecting to install the required devices and manifests.

Conclusion

The FRSC's upcoming crackdown on speed limit device tampering and the non-submission of passenger manifests marks a significant step toward enhancing road safety in Anambra State. As the March 1 enforcement date draws near, all eyes will be on the commercial transport sector to see if these strict measures can help reduce the high rate of road traffic accidents and ensure safer journeys for everyone.
