Know Your States In Nigeria: Delta State

Delta State is located in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria, Delta State is a treasure trove of rich cultural heritage, diverse ethnic groups, and breathtaking natural beauty. Formed in 1991 from the former Bendel State, Delta State is named after the majestic Niger Delta.

A Melting Pot of Cultures

Delta State is home to over 5.6 million people, spread across various ethnic groups, including the Urhobo, Anioma, Isoko, Ijaw, Ukwuani, Ika, Enuani, Itsekiri, and Olukumi. The state's capital, Asaba, and main economic center, Warri, are hubs of activity, showcasing the state's unique blend of tradition and modernity.

Economic Powerhouse

Delta State is a significant contributor to Nigeria's economy, with crude oil and natural gas production, agriculture, fishing, and heliculture being major industries. The state boasts an impressive array of solid mineral deposits, including industrial clay, silica, lignite, kaolin, tar sand, decorative rocks, and limestone.

Educational Institutions

Delta State is home to over 23 renowned institutions of higher learning, some of these are the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRI), Delta State University (DELSU), Federal University of Delta State (UNIDEL), and Petroleum Training Institute (PTI). 

Cultural Heritage

The state's rich cultural heritage is showcased through its vibrant music and dance, traditional clothing, and festivals. The Urhobo and Isoko people proudly wear their traditional attire, while the state's festivals, such as the Urhobo Festival, Isoko Festival, and Warri Festival, are a testament to its diverse cultural landscape.

Cuisine

Delta State's cuisine is a food lover's paradise, with mouth-watering dishes like Banga soup, ogwo evwri, white Egusi pepper soup, and Ukodo (a yam and plantain dish) showcasing the state's culinary expertise.

Traditional Rulers

The state's traditional rulers, including the Orodje of Okpe, Ovie of Ughelli, Pere of Gbaramatu, and Olu of Warri, play a significant role in preserving the state's cultural heritage and traditions.
