When God ask you question He is not looking for answers. So the question God asked Adam was critical. God knew Adam has departed from the position He placed Him but yet He asked Him where He is. What is God trying to know?
Many times in our life, God has been asking us questions but we think He is looking for informations and answers. No, God is not looking for information, He wants to reveal yourself and your mistakes to you.
He is all knowing and you cannot trick Him. He is aware of everything you are doing and want to do and will to do in the future.
And so God uses this kind of question to x-ray us and dissect the iniquities in our lives. Have you been doing something and the holy ghost asked you a question? What do you do at that particular moment?
I can tell you that most of the times the answer is to sit quiet and contemplate on what you are doing. It is supposed to be an answer of soberness and solemnity.
Don't ever try to answer God with explanation, He knows. Answer Him with soberness and solemnity. Soberness means being quiet and gentle while solemnity mean total calm. They look the same and that's what we ought to do.
Sometimes the pressures of life and the flesh will try to push us to do something the Holy Spirit doesn't want us to do but in our heart this question normally pops up. When it comes, calm down and listen to Him. It may save you five years of foolishness and depravity.
Finally, decision taken by ourselves can be questioned by God. When the question comes, calm down and ask for His conceal. Don't be too quick to explain, He knows, and so He is not looking for answers. He is looking for listening ears.
